Using Your Senses

Qaddafi’s Cook invites the audience to use more than sight and sound to experience the play.

The character Fredy, based on one of the Libyan dictator’s stable of international chefs, prepares the ruler’s favorite Mexican dishes right before the audience’s eyes and under their noses.

As Fredy tells the onlookers, “As sous chef, I do most of the cutting and chopping and frying and boiling and squeezing.” And he proceeds to do just that, creating onstage plates that are heavy in meaning as well as aroma.

In fact, here is a recipe from Fredy’s partner, Sergio—a creation that never failed to please the despot, until one day it didn’t.
